Happy Earth Day – Monday – April 22, 2019

Happy Monday!  Well… we made it back safely from Outdoor School!  It was a beautiful, sunny week!  We did a ton of walking and made wonderful memories!  Now back to business… we just have 5 more weeks until the end of the school year.  Yikes!

What are we learning about this week?

Bible –  We  will finish our unit, “The Exile returns” this week.  Our final focus will be on remembering what God has done in our lives and in the lives of others in the world around us.  Our final celebration will be on Friday where we will share something awesome that God has done in our lives.  We will celebrate what we have learned “birthday” style.  Please bring a “gift” that you have been given this school year and make sure it is wrapped up.  Also, our school service for the month of April is to do a surprise adventure for the Prek&K… and that is something we will do next week.

Math –  We are learning how to complete Algebraic Expressions with Decimals.  At the end of this study, students will have an assignment to apply how to complete both Fractions and Decimals using Algebraic Expressions.  While I was gone last week, the 7th and 8th graders worked on graphing data and equations.  We will pick that back up at the end of the week and go over what was missed.  Friday will be our Khan Academy review day.

Reading –  We are well into our final book assignment project.  For the 7th & 8th grade, they will be reading two chapter books, completing  projects over each book, and then write a Compare and Contrast paper about the books.  The 6th graders will have a similar project, but will only be reading a single textbook, but will complete the assignments based on the one book and its correlation with real life.  Also, remember, the 2 PR books for this quarter.

Spelling – The end of the year brings a different focus to spelling class.  Until May 9, the class will be studying the National Spelling Bee list for their weekly spelling words.  These words are grade level words that students need to know how to study and be familiar with.  Each week, until our class spelling be on May 9, the class will be studying and doing activities on 50 words.  At the end of each week, there will be a test over 20 random words from their 50 word list from that week.  The final test, on May 9, will be an in-class Spelling Bee where they will be randomly tested over a portion of all of the  words on their grade level list.

Social Studies – Ch.10 & 11 – We are learning about the new government and how it struggled to govern itself.  We will read/ learn about the impact made by those struggles.  Along with the reading, students will be working on an in-class newspaper project, where they will report, in different forms, about the events that were taking place at the time.  There are two more working class days for this project.  It is due on Wednesday, May 1.

Science –  We just finished our unit on Vertebrates and Invertebrates.  Our next unit is on Adaptation and Ecosystems.  We will read about physical and behavioral adaptations and how living things interact with their environments.

Language Arts – Since I was gone last week, students didn’t finish their essays, so all essays are due this week.  They will need to turn in their brainstorms and all drafts.  Also, this week, I will be going over how to write an Opinion Editorial for Social Studies.  This will be an article that they put in their Social Studies newspaper.

Final thoughts…

  • Please remember to check your REMIND app on a regular basis!  I will communicate mainly from there.

Look ahead –

May 10 – Fun Run – Students that register, pay, and participate in the Fun Run will have some great benefits.  They will get credit for participating.  They will get a 100% for every day of PE the last week of school.  Plus, they will not have to run the Panther Mile that last week.  Plus, I will also be offering extra credit for those that participate.  Make sure to sign up!

8 – Graduation has been set for Thursday, May 23.  There is a fee for graduation: for gowns, caps, decorations, etc.  Those fees will be discussed by the school committee and I will communicate with you soon.  Also, 8th grade class skip day will be discussed in the coming weeks.  Keep your eyes open!

8 – This week,  we are preparing for and beginning the slide show for graduation.  All 8th graders need to bring 5-8 pictures that they want in the slide show.  These pictures need to be baby pictures all the way through to current.  Please make sure to have them brought in by Friday.  They will be scanned and returned by next week.

Friday, May 3 – Class Reward – The whole class earned a behavioral award and voted to do a “Nailed It” style cooking challenge.  This challenge will be students taking the ingredients they are given to create a masterpiece of a dessert that looks the same as the dessert that is pictured.  This will be a fun reward for the class 🙂
