Happy Flower Day – Monday – May 20, 2019

Happy Monday!  And happy last Monday of year!  Holy Cow!  I can’t believe we are here.  I have been very blessed to teach these kiddos this year.  I absolutely know that God will do great things with each and every one of them.

What are we learning about this week?

Bible –  We finish up our unit on the Bible.  We have learned about the value of the Bible in our lives, the fact that others would die to protect it, and that we need to choose to spend time learning about God through reading its words.

Math –   We learned about the Pythagorean Theroem today and will finish that tomorrow.  Either tomorrow or Wednesday, we will take our end of school year Math assessment through Renaissance Learning.

Reading –  The 2 PR books for this quarter are due by Thursday. Students will also be required to make sure all 8 books, from the year, are read.  They will get points for the 100 points a piece for the two they finished this quarter, and 400 points total for all 8 books read for the year.  If students are not caught up, then they need to make sure to get caught up on their reading so their participation grade does not go down.

Spelling – no more spelling for the year

Social Studies – To end out the year, students will be making a mini-book with the ABCs of American and Texas history.  This will be due on Wednesday.  They will need to write the name, draw a picture, and write a brief explanation of what the chosen topic was.

Science – Today was our first medical professional meeting regarding the body, reproduction, childbirth, and diseases.  Mr. Jeremy Dayen came to discuss the curriculum from a medical standpoint  and answer questions that students may have.  Mrs. Maddie Olazaron will be coming on Wednesday.  She will be doing the same thing, but from a female perspective.  This is a wonderful way to discuss questions that kids have about their bodies and any concerns they may have.  This is also a great opportunity to talk about God’s design for our bodies and His concept of human creation. Make sure to talk with your child regarding the presentations, just to open up the line of communication in your family regarding this sensitive topic.

Language Arts – We  will be finising up our essays this week.  2nd draft is due tomorrow and the final/typed draft is due on Wednesday.

Final thoughts…

  • Please remember to check your REMIND app!
  • The Fun Run has been resheduled to Sunday, June 2.  It will be just like a regular 5k, but sponsored by the school.  It will not be a school day and school attendance will not be required, as it is during summer hours, but it is a fun way to reconnect after school has let out.  More detials to come soon.

Look ahead –

8th  – Graduation has been set for Thursday, May 23, at 6:30pm.  This is a joint graduation with our Senior student.  Each student is responsible for 1/2 of table to decorate that represents themselves.  The tribute table needs to be set up before leaving school, after K graduation, at the end of the day on Thursday.  Also, you are welcome to bring fruit plates or veggie plates for snacks.  Any food items or snacks that are brought will be the parent’s responsibility to have ready to serve, as there will not be anyone in the kitchen to take care of serving  or preparing it. We will need help with setup of decorations.  This will take place Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, the 21st and 22nd.  I ask that all 8th grade parents are involved with graduation in some aspect or another, so if you do not have anything yet, please contact me.  In regards to time, students will need to arrive no later than 6pm.

7th – 7th grade students are expected to attend graduation, as they will be leading the 8th grade students into the gym at the very beginning of the ceremony, and leading them out at the end.  Also, it is requested that 7th grade parents help with clean up at the end of the night so that 8th grade parents can spend time with their graduates and family members that came in for graduation.

Thursday – Class Party – Breakfast = I will be making pancakes for the class.  Students will need to bring breakfast items to share: Melanie- Juice, Marcella – Juice, Alejandra – hashbrowns, Christian – Cinnamon rolls, Katie – Juice, Glenn – Donuts, Rumbi – Bagels, Karolina – flavored cream cheese, Kasi – Muffins, Luke – Juice, Khumbula – Donut, Chelsea – Omelets

Happy National Nurses Day – Monday – May 6, 2019

Happy Monday!  Can you believe that we have 3 more weeks of school?  It is crazy to even think about considering it seems like we just started school a few weeks ago.  We still have a lot to do in the coming weeks, so stay fresh 🙂

What are we learning about this week?

Bible –  Week of Prayer was awesome!  The highschool planned the first few days.  Our class did Friday.  Then, we had a guest speaker to finish out the message on Friday.  It was such a great week!  Also, thank you soo much for your help with Education Sabbath.  The skit was well-received and the Sabbath was an absolute blessing!  In the classroom this week, we begin our last unit of the year.  We are learning about the Bible, itself.  We will learn about the history of the book and the many people who have died to make sure that it is continually an option for us to read on our spiritual walk.

Math –  Fraction and Decimal tests, from a few weeks ago, went home today.  I expect for corrections to be done and returned by tomorrow.  For the rest of this week, we will be working with graphing.  I will reteach/teach what was gone over for the 7th and 8th while I was at Outdoor School.  This way, the students that didn’t grasp the graphing concepts will be able to understand them a bit better.  And, after our Algebraic Graphing, we will finish the year on Geometry.

Reading –  We are on our final book assignment project.  For the 7th & 8th grade, they are reading two chapter books, completing  projects over each book, and then writing a Compare and Contrast paper about the books.  The 6th graders will have a similar project, but will only be reading a single textbook, but will complete the assignments based on the one book and its correlation with real life.  Also, remember, the 2 PR books for this quarter.

Spelling – The end of the year brings a different focus to spelling class.  Until May 9, the class will be studying the National Spelling Bee list for their weekly spelling words.  These words are grade level words that students need to know how to study and be familiar with.  Each week, until our class spelling be on May 9, the class will be studying and doing activities on 50 words.  The final test, on May 9, will be an in-class Spelling Bee where they will be randomly tested over a portion of all of the  words on their grade level list.  Students are being test over 250 words, so please make sure to study!

Social Studies – Newspaper projects are amazing!  I do not have them graded yet, but will be working on getting that finished in the next few days.  This week, we are talking about the continuation of the government, after the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  Students will be reading about the very specific events that have made an impact on how our society works today.

Science –  We will be learning more about Ecosystems this week.  Students will need to bring a shoe box, or a box the size of a shoe box, by tomorrow.  They will be creating an ecosystem for the creature they created in the last lab.  They will assemble this ecosystem with various things that are required for their creature’s survival… and possibly other things… It will be fun!  I am excited to see what they create!

Language Arts – Today, we started our new paper topic, a Compare and Contrast essay.  We will be writing about our Reading books.  The 7th & 8th graders are writing about “A Single Chard” and “Heartbeat”.  The 6th graders are writing about “A Family Apart” and the real orphan train for the late 1800s.  This paper is a work on progress and should, hopefully, be done by next week.

Final thoughts…

  • Please remember to check your REMIND app on a regular basis!  I will communicate mainly from there.
  • The Fun Run will be on Friday, May 10.  This will be an off campus event.  It will be at McDade Park.  The time for the event will be a regular school day – from 8:30 – 2pm, and attendance will be taken. The race itself will run from 9am – 11am.  We do request that parents attend the event, and you are able to leave after the race takes place and the awards are given out.  If you would like to get a t-shirt, breakfast, and medal, the fee for participation is $25.  If you would just like to run in the event, then you may run for free.  It will be a blast of a day!   Please make sure to return the form that is coming home from the office.

Look ahead –

May 10 – Fun Run – Students that register, pay, and participate in the Fun Run will have some great benefits.  They will get credit for participating.  They will get a 100% for every day of PE the last week of school.  Plus, they will not have to run the Panther Mile that last week.  Plus, I will also be offering extra credit for those that participate.  Make sure to sign up!

8 – Graduation has been set for Thursday, May 23.  There is a fee for graduation: for gowns, caps, decorations, etc.  Tomorrow is the final administrative graduation committee meeting, so I should be able to let you know what the final fees are this next week.  From the looks of it, though, with all the fundraising, it doesn’t look like parents will have to pay for much of anything.  That is awesome!

Friday, May 3 – Class Reward – The “Nailed It” challenge was a blast!  We did have two winning teams, one was for flavor and texture, and the other was for decoration.  Awards will be given out tomorrow.
